Portsmouth FC: Foundations and Early Success
From 1898 Origins to FA Cup Glory (1898–1930s)
Portsmouth Football Club was founded on 5 April 1898 at a meeting in the Old House at Home pub in Portsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire. The club was formed by a group of local businessmen and football enthusiasts to bring professional football to the naval city. They adopted royal blue shirts and white shorts, earning the nickname Pompey from the city's naval heritage and the Roman name for Portsmouth. The club played their first match on 2 September 1899 against Cowes at the Garrison Ground, winning 2–0.
Portsmouth joined the Southern League Second Division in 1899–1900 and won promotion to the First Division in 1901–02. They reached the Southern League Premier Division and won the title in 1901–02. The club moved to Fratton Park in 1899, their historic home ever since, with its distinctive Fratton End and South Stand becoming symbols of the club's passionate support. Portsmouth gained election to the Football League Third Division South in 1920 as founder members.
The 1920s and 1930s marked Pompey's golden era. They won promotion to the Second Division in 1923–24 and to the First Division in 1926–27 under manager Jack Tinn. Portsmouth won the FA Cup in 1938–39 (4–1 against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Wembley) and finished runners-up in the First Division in 1929–30 and 1931–32. The club reached the FA Cup final again in 1933–34 (losing 2–1 to Manchester City) and maintained top-flight status through the 1930s.
World War II interrupted league play, with Fratton Park used for military purposes. These early decades built immense pride in Portsmouth. Back-to-Back Titles to League One in 2026 (1940s–Present)
Post-World War II, Portsmouth enjoyed their most successful period under manager Bob Jackson. They won the First Division title in 1948–49 and 1949–50, becoming the first club to win consecutive league titles after the war. The team featured stars like Jimmy Dickinson, Duggie Reid, and Peter Harris, and maintained top-flight status until relegation in 1958–59. The club reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1953–54 and 1956–57.
The 1960s and 1970s brought decline. Relegation to the Second Division came in 1960–61, followed by the Third Division in 1975–76. Portsmouth won promotion back in 1979–80 and reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1989–90. The club moved to Fratton Park's modernised facilities in the 1990s and won promotion to the Premier League in 2002–03 under Harry Redknapp. They finished runners-up in the FA Cup in 2009–10 (losing 1–0 to Chelsea after extra time).
Financial difficulties led to administration in 2009–10 and 2011–12, with relegation to League One in 2011–12 and League Two in 2012–13. Portsmouth won promotion from League Two in 2016–17 as champions under Kenny Jackett. They achieved promotion to League One in 2021–22 via the League Two play-offs under Danny Cowley. The club has maintained League One status since, with strong cup runs and focus on youth development at Fratton Park.
In the 2025–26 League One season, Portsmouth sit 1st after 35 games (20 wins, 10 draws, 5 losses, 58 goals for, 32 against, 70 points). They lead the table with strong promotion form at Fratton Park. Recent years reflect determination and resurgence in the third tier.
