Oxford United Football Club was founded in 1893 as Headington FC by residents of the Headington area in Oxford. The club initially played local matches and joined the Oxfordshire Senior League in 1896. They adopted yellow and blue colours and played at various grounds before settling at the Manor Ground in 1925, their home for over seven decades and a venue that became central to the club's identity.
Headington United joined the Spartan League in 1928 and won promotion to the Southern League in 1958. The club changed its name to Oxford United in 1962 to represent the whole city. They gained election to the Football League Fourth Division in 1962, replacing Accrington Stanley. Oxford won promotion to the Third Division in 1964–65 as Fourth Division runners-up under manager Arthur Turner.
The 1980s brought significant success. Under manager Jim Smith, Oxford won promotion to the Second Division in 1983–84 and reached the Second Division play-offs in 1985–86. The club achieved promotion to the First Division in 1984–85 via the Third Division play-offs, defeating Bolton Wanderers 3–1 on aggregate. They spent three seasons in the top flight from 1985 to 1988, reaching the League Cup final in 1985–86 (losing 3–0 to QPR after a replay).
These formative years built strong Oxfordshire roots. From 1893 local beginnings and Southern League success to Football League entry and 1985 First Division promotion, Oxford United established resilience and ambition in southern England football at the Manor Ground.

The late 1980s and 1990s brought decline. Relegation from the First Division came in 1987–88, followed by further drops to the Third Division in 1991–92 and the Fourth Division in 1993–94. The club moved to the modern Kassam Stadium in 2001 after the Manor Ground's closure. Oxford spent much of the 2000s in the lower divisions and was relegated to the Conference in 2005–06 after administration.
Oxford won promotion back to the Football League in 2009–10 as Conference runners-up under manager Chris Wilder. They achieved promotion from League Two in 2015–16 via the League Two play-offs under Michael Appleton. The club reached the League One play-offs in 2016–17 and maintained third-tier status with strong cup runs, including the League Cup semi-finals in 2016–17 (losing to Southampton).
Recent seasons include consistent League One campaigns with focus on youth development and community engagement. The Kassam Stadium has been modernised with new facilities and plans for further expansion. The U's maintain passionate support in Oxford and continue to build on their EFL stability and ambition.
In the 2025–26 League One season, Oxford United sit 7th after 35 games (15 wins, 9 draws, 11 losses, 52 goals for, 46 against, 54 points). They compete strongly for play-off places with consistent home form at the Kassam Stadium. Recent years reflect determination and progress in the third tier.
Oxford United's history reflects remarkable endurance. From 1893 local beginnings and 1985 First Division promotion to non-league exile, 2016 League One return, and ongoing League One presence, the U's embody resilience, community spirit, and pride in Oxfordshire football at the Kassam Stadium.
