Nottingham Forest FC: European Glory and Modern Journey
Clough Era to 2026 Premier League (1970s–Present)
The appointment of Brian Clough as manager in 1975 transformed Nottingham Forest. Promoted to the First Division in 1976–77, they won the league title in 1977–78 and the European Cup in 1978–79 (1–0 against Malmö) and 1979–80 (1–0 against Hamburg). Forest also won the League Cup in 1977–78 and 1978–79, the Super Cup in 1979, and reached the European Cup final in 1980. The team featured stars like Martin O'Neill, John Robertson, and Peter Shilton.
After Clough's departure in 1993, Forest struggled. Relegation from the Premier League came in 1992–93, 1996–97, and 1998–99. The club spent much of the 2000s and 2010s in the Championship and League One, including relegation to League One in 2004–05 and promotion back in 2007–08. The move to modernise the City Ground continued with new stands.
Under Nuno Espírito Santo (2021–22) and Steve Cooper (2021–23), Forest won promotion to the Premier League in 2021–22 via the Championship play-offs. They achieved survival in 2022–23 and 2023–24. The club appointed Nuno Espírito Santo again in 2024 after Cooper's departure. The City Ground has undergone redevelopment, increasing capacity and facilities.
In the 2025–26 Premier League season, Nottingham Forest sit 11th after 29 games (10 wins, 9 draws, 10 losses, 40 goals for, 42 against, 39 points). They compete solidly in mid-table with strong home form at the City Ground. Recent years focus on stability and progressive football under current management.
Nottingham Forest's history reflects extraordinary highs and endurance. From 1865 local beginnings and 1970s–80s European dominance to 2022 Premier League return and ongoing top-flight presence, the Reds embody resilience, community spirit, and pride in Nottinghamshire football at the City Ground.
