Foundation and Non-League Success (1886–1950)
Shrewsbury Town Football Club was founded on 20 May 1886 at a meeting in the Turf Hotel, Claremont Hill, Shrewsbury. This followed the collapse of earlier local sides like Castle Blues, known for rough play, and Shropshire Wanderers. The new club aimed for success without the previous notoriety.
Early reports vary slightly on the exact formation spot. Some mention a gathering at The Lion Hotel on Wyle Cop, possibly finalised at the Turf. After initial friendlies and regional cups, Shrewsbury became founder members of the Shropshire & District League in 1890–91.
They finished runners-up that season and won the Welsh Cup in their fourth attempt, marking early silverware. In 1895, the club joined the Birmingham & District League. They claimed their first league title there in 1922–23 under strong management.
In 1910, Shrewsbury moved to Gay Meadow, a scenic ground by the River Severn near Shrewsbury Abbey. This iconic home served the club for nearly a century. They switched to the Midland League in 1937, winning titles in 1937–38, 1945–46, and 1947–48.
The club also enjoyed repeated Welsh Cup triumphs, including 1937–38. These non-league years built a solid foundation. Shrewsbury established a reputation for competitiveness in regional competitions despite limited resources.
World wars interrupted progress, but post-1945 success accelerated ambitions. The club applied for and gained election to the Football League in 1950. This marked the end of non-league status and entry into national structured football.

Football League Journey and Recent Decades (1950–Present)
Shrewsbury entered the Football League Third Division North in 1950. After one season, they transferred to the Third Division South. Reorganisation in 1958 placed them in the Fourth Division initially, but promotion came swiftly in 1958–59 after finishing fourth.
The 1960s and 1970s brought stability in Division Three. A League Cup semi-final appearance in 1960–61 highlighted cup potential. Under manager Richie Barker and later others, Shrewsbury achieved promotion to the old Second Division in 1978–79 as Third Division champions.
They introduced their famous blue-and-amber stripes around this golden period. Further Welsh Cup wins came in 1976–77, 1978–79, 1983–84, and 1984–85. FA Cup quarter-finals in 1978–79 and 1981–82 added memorable runs.
Relegations followed in the 1980s and 1990s. Shrewsbury won the Fourth Division title in 1993–94. They suffered relegation to the Conference in 2003 but bounced back via play-offs in 2004, defeating Aldershot on penalties.
In 2007, the club relocated to the New Meadow (now Croud Meadow). Recent years included League Two promotions pushes, play-off finals in 2007, 2009, 2018, and EFL Trophy finals in 1996 and 2018. Shrewsbury have remained in League One or Two consistently.
Today, the Shrews maintain strong community ties in Shropshire. Known for resilience, cup exploits, and loyal support, they continue competing with pride in the EFL. Their history reflects determination from humble beginnings to sustained professional status.
