Cardiff City Football Club was founded on 9 June 1899 as Riverside Cricket Club by members of Riverside Cricket Club in Cardiff, Wales. The club switched to association football in 1900 and adopted the name Cardiff City in 1908 after gaining admission to the Southern League Second Division. They wore blue shirts, earning the nickname the Bluebirds, and played early matches at various grounds before moving to Ninian Park in 1910, their iconic home for nearly a century.
Cardiff joined the Southern League First Division in 1910–11 and quickly established themselves as a force. They won promotion to the Football League Second Division in 1920 and reached the First Division in 1920–21 as runners-up. The club enjoyed a remarkable period in the 1920s under manager Fred Stewart, finishing runners-up in the First Division in 1923–24 and reaching the FA Cup final three times in four years: 1925 (lost 1–0 to Sheffield United), 1927 (won 1–0 against Arsenal with Ernie Curtis scoring the only goal), and 1928 (lost 1–0 to Blackburn Rovers).
The 1927 FA Cup victory remains Cardiff's only major English trophy and made them the only non-English club to win the competition. They also reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1929–30. World War II interrupted league play, with Ninian Park used for military purposes, but post-war Cardiff returned to the First Division and finished runners-up again in 1951–52 under manager Cyril Spiers.
The 1950s brought consistent top-flight presence with strong cup runs, including the FA Cup semi-finals in 1958–59. These early decades built immense pride in Cardiff. The 1960s and 1970s saw decline from the First Division. Relegation to the Second Division came in 1961–62, followed by further drops to the Third Division in 1975–76. Cardiff won the FA Cup in 2007–08 under Dave Jones, beating Portsmouth 1–0 at Wembley with Joe Ledley's goal, qualifying for the UEFA Cup. Cardiff achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2012–13 under Malky Mackay via the Championship runners-up spot. They spent one season in the top flight in 2013–14 before relegation. Further promotion followed in 2017–18 under Neil Warnock, with another single-season Premier League stay in 2018–19. The club has remained in the Championship since, with play-off pushes and strong home form at Cardiff City Stadium.
