Blackpool FC: Foundations and Golden Era
From 1887 Origins to 1953 FA Cup Triumph (1887–1960s)
Blackpool Football Club was founded in 1887 by former students of St John's School in the seaside resort town of Blackpool, Lancashire. They merged with local rivals South Shore FC in 1899, strengthening their position. The club played early games at Raikes Hall and the Athletic Grounds before moving to Bloomfield Road in 1901, their iconic home ever since.
Blackpool joined the Lancashire League in 1889 as founder members. They entered the Football League Second Division in 1896 but were not re-elected after 1898–99, spending one season back in the Lancashire League before returning in 1900. Steady progress followed in the lower divisions, with promotion to the First Division in 1930 after winning Division Two in 1929–30.
The interwar years saw Blackpool establish themselves in the top flight. They reached the FA Cup final in 1948 and 1951, both losses. The pinnacle arrived in 1953 with victory in the famous "Matthews Final" against Bolton Wanderers. Trailing 3–1 with 22 minutes left, Stan Mortensen scored a hat-trick and Bill Perry the winner for a 4–3 comeback, inspired by Stanley Matthews at Wembley.
Under manager Joe Smith from 1935, Blackpool enjoyed their most successful period. They finished runners-up in Division One in 1955–56, their highest league placing. Matthews, Mortensen, and Allan Brown formed a legendary forward line. Bloomfield Road became a fortress with record crowds drawn by the entertaining style.
The late 1950s and early 1960s brought decline. Relegation from the First Division in 1966–67 ended a long top-flight stay. These early decades built Blackpool's identity. From humble seaside beginnings to FA Cup glory and top-division presence, the Seasiders embodied flair and resilience tied to the town's holiday spirit.
