Founding and Early Professional Development
From 1881 Glyn Cricket Club to Brisbane Road and Football League Entry
Leyton Orient FC traces its origins to 1881 when members of the Glyn Cricket Club in Leyton, East London, formed Leyton Orient Cricket & Football Club. The "Orient" name came from the Orient Shipping Company, whose employees were among the founders. They played early matches at various local grounds before settling at Millmead Avenue in Leyton.
The club turned professional in 1904 and joined the Southern League. In 1907 they shortened the name to Leyton Orient and moved to Millfields Road. Financial difficulties led to liquidation in 1912, but the club reformed and joined the Midland League. They were elected to the Football League Third Division in 1921 as founder members after the league's expansion.
In 1937 Leyton Orient moved to their current home, Brisbane Road (then called Osborne Road), in Leyton. The ground has remained their base ever since, with expansions in the 1950s and 1990s. They reached the FA Cup fourth round in 1928–29 and won promotion to the Second Division in 1955–56 as Third Division champions.
The club achieved their highest league finish of 11th in Division Two in 1956–57. Brisbane Road hosted record crowds during this competitive period and became a symbol of the club's East London identity amid post-war growth.
These early decades transformed Leyton Orient from a cricket offshoot into a professional Football League club with deep roots in the East End of London.

Modern Era, Promotions, and Recent League One Years
1960s–1980s Second Division Spells, 1990s Decline, and 2023 League Two Title
Leyton Orient enjoyed their longest Second Division spell from 1963 to 1982 under managers like Johnny Carey and George Petchey. They reached the FA Cup semi-final in 1977–78, losing 1–0 to Arsenal after a replay at Stamford Bridge. The club finished runners-up in Division Three in 1988–89 for promotion to the Second Division.
Financial difficulties and ownership changes marked the 1990s and 2000s. Relegation to the Fourth Division came in 1995, followed by administration in 2003. Barry Hearn's takeover in 1995 stabilized the club. Promotion to League One arrived in 2005–06 via League Two play-offs under Martin Ling.
Orient reached the League One play-off final in 2013–14 (lost to Rotherham United) and won promotion to League One in 2022–23 as League Two runners-up under Richie Wellens. They secured automatic promotion to League One in 2023–24 as League Two champions under Richie Wellens. As of 2026 Leyton Orient compete in League One at Brisbane Road, a 9,271-capacity stadium with modern upgrades and strong East London support.
Leyton Orient's history includes one Third Division title, a famous 1978 FA Cup semi-final, and recent resurgence from administration to League One stability. Their story reflects resilience, passionate fan ownership, and enduring ties to East London football.
