Barnet FC: Football League Era and Modern Journey
League Entry, Promotions, and National League Return (1970s–Present)
Barnet joined the Football League Fourth Division in 1979 after election from the Southern League Premier Division. They won promotion to the Third Division in 1990–91 under manager Barry Fry as Fourth Division runners-up. The club reached the FA Cup fourth round in 1990–91 and enjoyed strong cup runs in the 1990s. They spent several seasons in the third tier before relegation in 2000–01 and to the Conference in 2004–05 after administration.
Barnet won promotion back to the Football League in 2004–05 as Conference champions under manager Paul Fairclough. They spent six seasons in League Two before relegation in 2012–13. The club dropped to the National League again in 2017–18 but won promotion back in 2017–18 via the National League South play-offs. They achieved promotion from the National League in 2022–23 via the play-offs under manager Dean Brennan, defeating Notts County 2–1 in the final at Wembley.
The club moved to the modern Hive London Stadium in 2013 after Underhill's closure, a 5,176-capacity venue shared with London Bees. Recent seasons include strong League Two campaigns with focus on youth development and community engagement. The Bees maintain passionate support in Barnet and continue to build on their EFL return.
In the 2025–26 League Two season, Barnet sit 9th after 35 games (14 wins, 9 draws, 12 losses, 50 goals for, 48 against, 51 points). They compete strongly for play-off places with consistent home form at The Hive London. Recent years reflect determination and progress in the fourth tier.
Barnet FC's history reflects remarkable endurance. From 1888 local beginnings and Southern League success to 1991 League entry, 2005 Conference title, 2023 League Two promotion, and ongoing EFL presence, the Bees embody resilience, community spirit, and ambition in north London football at The Hive London.
