Brighton & Hove Albion FC: Modern Era and Premier League Rise
Promotions, Goldstone Closure, and Premier League in 2026 (1970s–Present)
The 1970s brought promotion to the First Division in 1978–79 under manager Alan Mullery, with the club spending two seasons in the top flight from 1979 to 1981 before relegation. The 1990s saw decline, including relegation to the Third Division in 1995–96 and the closure of the Goldstone Ground in 1997 amid financial struggles and planning disputes. The club ground-shared at Gillingham's Priestfield Stadium from 1997 to 1999.
Brighton returned to Sussex with the opening of the Withdean Stadium in 1999. They won promotion from the Third Division in 2000–01 and reached the Second Division play-offs in 2003–04. The club moved to the modern Amex Stadium (Falmer Stadium) in 2011, boosting capacity and facilities. Promotion to the Championship arrived in 2015–16 as League One runners-up under Chris Hughton.
Brighton achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2016–17 via the Championship play-off final win over Huddersfield Town under Hughton. They spent seven consecutive seasons in the Premier League from 2017 to 2024, achieving survival each year and reaching the FA Cup semi-finals in 2018–19. Relegation in 2023–24 led to immediate promotion back in 2024–25 as Championship runners-up under Fabian Hürzeler.
In the 2025–26 Premier League season, Brighton & Hove Albion sit 12th after 29 games (10 wins, 8 draws, 11 losses, 42 goals for, 44 against, 38 points). They compete solidly in mid-table with strong home form at the Amex Stadium. Recent years focus on progressive football and youth development.
Brighton & Hove Albion's history reflects remarkable transformation. From 1901 local beginnings and 1979 First Division promotion to Goldstone closure, Amex arrival, and sustained Premier League presence, the Seagulls embody resilience, community spirit, and ambition in Sussex football at the Amex Stadium.
