Burton Albion Football Club was founded in 1950 by a group of local enthusiasts in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, a town famous for its brewing industry. The club began life as a non-league side playing at the Eton Park ground, which they shared initially with other local teams. They joined the Birmingham & District League in their debut season and quickly established themselves in regional football.
Early success came in the 1950s and 1960s with multiple Birmingham Combination and West Midlands League titles. Burton turned fully professional in the late 1950s and enjoyed strong cup runs, including reaching the FA Cup first round several times. The club moved to the Southern League in the 1960s, winning the Premier Division North in 1965–66 and the Premier Division in 1971–72.
Financial challenges marked the 1970s and 1980s, but Burton remained competitive in the Southern League Midland Division. Under manager Nigel Clough from 1998, the club achieved back-to-back promotions, reaching the Conference (now National League) in 2002 after winning the Southern League Premier title.
In the Conference, Burton consolidated quickly. They finished runners-up in 2008–09, earning promotion to the Football League for the first time in their 59-year history via the play-offs. The move to the modern Pirelli Stadium in 2005 provided a new home with increased capacity and modern facilities, supporting their rapid ascent.

Burton Albion entered the Football League in 2009–10, finishing 13th in League Two in their debut season. They achieved promotion to League One in 2014–15 as runners-up under Gary Rowett. Relegation to League Two came in 2022–23. Burton won promotion back to League One in 2023–24 via the League Two play-offs, defeating Crawley Town in the final. They have maintained League One status since, focusing on stability and youth development under recent management.
