Huddersfield Town Association Football Club was founded on 15 August 1908 at the Albert Hotel in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, by a group of local enthusiasts seeking to establish senior football in the town. The club adopted blue and white stripes and played early matches at Leeds Road before moving to their current home, the John Smith's Stadium (formerly Galpharm and Alfred McAlpine Stadium), in 1994. They joined the North Eastern League in 1908–09 and turned professional the following year.
Huddersfield gained election to the Football League Second Division in 1910. Promotion to the First Division arrived in 1919–20 after finishing runners-up in Division Two. Under legendary manager Herbert Chapman from 1921, the club entered their most successful period. They won the FA Cup in 1921–22, defeating Preston North End 1–0 at Stamford Bridge, their first major trophy.
The 1920s marked Huddersfield's golden era. They became the first club to win three consecutive First Division titles in 1923–24, 1924–25, and 1925–26 under Chapman and then Cecil Potter. The team featured stars like Clem Stephenson, Billy Smith, and Roy Goodall. They reached the FA Cup final again in 1927–28 and 1929–30, losing both to Blackburn Rovers and Arsenal respectively.
The interwar period saw consistent top-flight presence with strong cup runs. World War II interrupted league play, but Huddersfield returned to Division One post-war. Decline, Promotions, and Premier League Return (1950s–2026)
Post-war decline saw relegation from Division One in 1951–52. Huddersfield spent much of the 1950s and 1960s in the Second Division with occasional cup runs. They dropped to the Fourth Division in 1974–75 but won promotion back in 1976–77. The club reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1979–80, losing 1–0 to West Ham United after a replay.
The 1990s brought further struggles, including relegation to the Third Division in 1994. The move to the new McAlpine Stadium in 1994 provided modern facilities. Promotion to the Championship arrived in 2011–12 via League One play-offs under Simon Grayson. Huddersfield achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2016–17 under David Wagner via the Championship play-off final penalty shoot-out victory over Reading at Wembley.
They spent five seasons in the Premier League from 2017–18 to 2021–22, achieving survival in their first two campaigns with memorable performances. Relegation in 2021–22 led to League One in 2022–23. The club won promotion back to the Championship in 2023–24 via the League One play-offs under Michael Duff. The John Smith's Stadium continues as home with strong community support in Huddersfield.
