Lincoln City Football Club was founded on 9 June 1884 at a meeting in the John O'Gaunt public house in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. The club emerged from the Lincoln Cricket Club and adopted red and white quartered shirts, earning the nickname the Imps after the Lincoln Imp legend. They played early matches at John O'Gaunt's ground before moving to the John O'Gaunts (now Sincil Bank) in 1895, their home ever since and one of the oldest continuously used stadiums in English football.
Lincoln joined the Midland League in 1889 and won the title in 1893–94. They became founder members of the Football League Second Division in 1892 but were not re-elected after one season. Re-admitted in 1897, they competed in the Second Division until relegated to the Third Division North in 1920–21 after league reorganisation. The club enjoyed cup runs, reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals in 1901–02 and 1906–07.
The interwar period saw consistent Third Division North presence with occasional promotion challenges. Lincoln won the Third Division North title in 1931–32 and reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1936–37, losing 5–1 to Sunderland after a replay. World War II interrupted play, with Sincil Bank used for military purposes, but post-war they remained in the Third Division North until 1958 reorganisation placed them in Division Three.
The 1950s and 1960s brought promotion to the Second Division in 1951–52 and 1960–61 as Third Division champions. They enjoyed strong cup runs, including the FA Cup fourth round multiple times. These early decades built deep community roots in Lincoln. Promotions, Non-League Struggles, and League One in 2026 (1970s–Present)
The 1970s and 1980s saw Lincoln yo-yo between the Third and Fourth Divisions. Relegation to the Fourth Division occurred in 1975–76, but promotion returned in 1980–81. The club reached the FA Cup quarter-finals in 1984–85 and 1985–86. Financial difficulties led to relegation to the Conference in 1986–87 after administration. Lincoln won promotion back in 1987–88 via the Conference title under manager Colin Murphy.
The club enjoyed a memorable FA Cup run in 2016–17 under Danny Cowley, reaching the quarter-finals as a non-league side before losing 2–1 to Arsenal at Emirates Stadium. They won promotion from the National League in 2016–17 via the play-offs and from League Two in 2021–22 via the play-offs under Michael Appleton. Lincoln reached the League One play-offs in 2022–23 but fell short.
Recent seasons include strong League One campaigns with focus on youth development and community engagement. The club maintains passionate support at Sincil Bank (LNER Stadium) with ongoing redevelopment plans. The Imps remain a model of lower-league resilience and ambition in Lincolnshire.
In the 2025–26 League One season, Lincoln City sit 9th after 35 games (14 wins, 10 draws, 11 losses, 52 goals for, 48 against, 52 points). They compete strongly for play-off places with consistent home form. Recent years reflect determination and competitiveness in the third tier.
