Mansfield Town FC: Promotions, Cup Runs, and Modern Era
Fourth Division Titles to League Two in 2026 (1970s–Present)
The 1970s and 1980s brought fluctuations. Mansfield won the Fourth Division title in 1974–75 and reached the FA Cup quarter-finals in 1978–79, losing 2–0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers. They achieved promotion to the Third Division again in 1985–86 and enjoyed a memorable FA Cup run in 1990–91, reaching the quarter-finals before losing to Tottenham Hotspur.
The 1990s saw relegation to the Conference in 1993, but immediate return followed in 1994–95 via the Conference title. Further promotions included the Third Division play-off final win in 1998–99 and the League Two title in 2012–13 under Paul Cox. The club moved through ownership changes, including the John Radford era from 2010.
Mansfield returned to League Two after the Conference spell and secured promotion to League One in 2023–24 as League Two champions under Nigel Clough. They have maintained League One status since, with Field Mill (One Call Stadium) undergoing improvements to support growing crowds and community engagement.
In the 2025–26 League One season, Mansfield Town sit 14th after 35 games (12 wins, 9 draws, 14 losses, 48 goals for, 52 against, 45 points). They compete solidly in mid-table with strong home form. Recent years focus on consolidation and ambition in the third tier.
Mansfield Town's history reflects remarkable perseverance. From 1897 chapel beginnings and long lower-league battles to multiple promotions, memorable FA Cup runs, and current League One presence, the Stags embody resilience, community pride, and enduring spirit in Nottinghamshire football.
