Northampton Town FC: Modern Era and Recent Revival
Promotions, Relegations, and League One in 2026 (1970s–Present)
The 1970s and 1980s saw Northampton yo-yo between the Third and Fourth Divisions. Relegation to the Fourth Division came in 1977–78, but promotion returned in 1986–87. The club reached the FA Cup fourth round multiple times in the 1980s and 1990s. Under manager Ian Atkins, they won promotion from the Third Division in 1999–2000 via the play-offs. Northampton spent several seasons in League One before relegation in 2008–09.
The club won promotion back to League One in 2015–16 as League Two runners-up under Chris Wilder. They achieved promotion again in 2022–23 as League Two champions under Jon Brady. The County Ground has been modernised with new stands and facilities to support growing crowds in Northampton. Recent seasons include strong League One campaigns with focus on youth development and community engagement.
In the 2025–26 League One season, Northampton Town sit 10th after 35 games (13 wins, 10 draws, 12 losses, 48 goals for, 50 against, 49 points). They compete solidly in mid-table with passionate Cobblers support at the County Ground. Recent years reflect determination and progress in the third tier.
Northampton Town's history reflects remarkable endurance. From 1897 local beginnings and 1961 promotion to 2023 League Two title, multiple promotions, and ongoing League One presence, the Cobblers embody resilience, community spirit, and pride in Northamptonshire football at the County Ground.
