Norwich City Football Club was founded on 17 June 1902 at a meeting in the Criterion Cafe in Norwich, Norfolk. The club was established by a group of local businessmen and football enthusiasts to provide professional football in the city. They adopted yellow and green colours, earning the nickname the Canaries from the city's historic canary-breeding industry, and played their first match on 6 September 1902 against Harwich & Parkeston at the Newmarket Road ground, winning 2–1.
Norwich joined the Norfolk & Suffolk League in 1902–03 and won promotion to the Southern League Second Division in 1908. They reached the Southern League First Division in 1912–13 and enjoyed strong FA Cup runs, including the third round in 1913–14. The club moved to The Nest in 1908 and then to Carrow Road in 1935, their current home with its distinctive River End and Barclay stands that have become symbols of the club's passionate support.
In 1920, Norwich became founder members of the Football League Third Division. They competed in the Third Division South, finishing runners-up in 1952–53 for promotion to the Second Division. The club reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1958–59, losing 1–0 to Luton Town after a replay at White Hart Lane. World War II interrupted league play, with Carrow Road used for military purposes, but post-war Norwich rebuilt steadily under managers like Archie Macaulay.
The 1960s brought promotion to the Second Division in 1959–60 and consistent mid-table finishes. These early decades built strong Norfolk roots.
