Port Vale Football Club traces its origins to 1876 when it was formed as Burslem Port Vale by employees of the Port Vale ironworks in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. The club played its early matches at the Athletic Ground in Burslem and joined the North Staffordshire & District League in 1884. They adopted black and gold stripes initially before switching to black and white in the 1880s, earning the nickname the Valiants from the club's resilient spirit.
Port Vale joined the Midland League in 1892 and reached the FA Cup first round in 1898–99. Financial difficulties led to a brief merger with Burslem Port Vale in 1907, but the club reformed and moved to the Athletic Ground in 1913. They joined the Football League Second Division in 1919 but were not re-elected after one season. Re-admitted in 1921 to the Third Division North, they competed consistently in the lower divisions.
The club moved to Vale Park in 1950, their current home with a capacity of over 19,000. They won promotion to the Second Division in 1953–54 as Third Division North runners-up under manager Freddie Steele. The 1950s brought strong cup runs, including the FA Cup quarter-finals in 1953–54 (losing 2–1 to West Bromwich Albion) and 1954–55 (losing 1–0 to Manchester City). These early decades built deep roots in the Potteries. From 1876 ironworks origins and Midland League success to Football League entry and Vale Park opening, Port Vale established resilience and local pride in Staffordshire football.

Promotions, Relegations, and League Two in 2026 (1960s–Present)
The 1960s and 1970s saw Port Vale yo-yo between the Third and Fourth Divisions. They won promotion from the Fourth Division in 1964–65 and reached the League Cup semi-finals in 1963–64 (losing 3–2 on aggregate to Leicester City). The club enjoyed strong cup runs, including the FA Cup fifth round in 1970–71. Relegation to the Fourth Division became frequent in the 1980s and 1990s amid financial challenges.
Under manager John Rudge from 1987 to 1999, Port Vale achieved promotion to the Second Division in 1988–89 and reached the play-offs in the 1990s. They won the Football League Trophy in 1992–93 (2–1 against Stockport County at Wembley) and reached the Anglo-Italian Cup final in 1993–94. The club moved to Vale Park's modernised facilities in the 1990s and maintained League status through turbulent periods.
Financial administration in 2002–03 led to relegation to League Two in 2007–08. Port Vale won promotion back in 2012–13 as League Two runners-up under Micky Adams. They spent several seasons in League One before relegation in 2017–18. The club achieved promotion from League Two in 2021–22 via the play-offs under Darrell Clarke. Recent years include mid-table finishes and cup runs under managers like Andy Crosby and Darren Moore.
In the 2025–26 League Two season, Port Vale sit 13th after 35 games (12 wins, 10 draws, 13 losses, 46 goals for, 50 against, 46 points). They compete solidly in mid-table with passionate Valiants support at Vale Park. Recent seasons focus on stability and youth development.
