Preston North End Football Club was founded in 1880 as a winter offshoot of the North End Cricket Club in Preston, Lancashire. The club initially played rugby before switching to association football in 1881. They adopted white shirts and navy blue shorts and played early matches at the Marsh near the River Ribble before moving to the original Deepdale in 1875 (expanded and modernised over time), which remains the oldest continuously used league football ground in the world.
Preston joined the Lancashire League in 1881 and turned professional in 1885. Under manager William Sudell, they became one of the strongest sides in England. The club were founder members of the Football League in 1888 and won the inaugural First Division title in 1888–89 without losing a match, completing the first unbeaten league season in English football history – the legendary "Invincibles". They also won the FA Cup in 1888–89 (3–0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Oval), becoming the first club to achieve the league and cup double.
Preston retained the First Division title in 1889–90, remaining unbeaten at home for three consecutive seasons. They reached the FA Cup final again in 1893–94 (losing 3–2 after extra time to Notts County). The club maintained top-flight status through the early 1900s, reaching the FA Cup semi-finals in 1900–01 and 1901–02. The early decades established Preston as a pioneering force in English football. Post-War Decline to Championship in 2026 (1950s–Present)
The post-war period saw Preston remain in the First Division until relegation in 1960–61. They reached the FA Cup final in 1953–54 (losing 3–2 to West Bromwich Albion after extra time at Wembley) under manager Frank Hill. The club won promotion back in 1950–51 but faced further relegations in the 1970s and 1980s, dropping to the Fourth Division in 1984–85. Deepdale was modernised in the 1990s with new stands replacing the old terracing.
Under managers like John Beck and David Moyes, Preston achieved promotion to the Championship in 1999–2000 via the Third Division play-offs. They reached the Championship play-offs in 2000–01 and 2001–02 under Moyes. The club spent over two decades in the Championship with strong seasons, including the play-off final in 2004–05 (losing 1–0 to West Ham United) and 2014–15 (losing 4–0 to Middlesbrough) under Steve Cotterill and Gary Rowett.
Recent years include mid-table finishes in the Championship with focus on youth development and community engagement. The club reached the Championship play-offs in 2020–21 under Ryan Lowe. Deepdale has been upgraded with new facilities to support growing crowds in Preston. The Lilywhites maintain passionate support and continue to aim for Premier League return.
In the 2025–26 Championship season, Preston North End sit 11th after 35 games (13 wins, 9 draws, 13 losses, 46 goals for, 48 against, 48 points). They compete solidly in mid-table with consistent home form at Deepdale. Recent seasons reflect determination and progress in the second tier.
