Rotherham United FC: Early Years and League Foundations
From 1870 Origins to Football League Entry (1870–1960s)
Rotherham United Football Club traces its roots to 1870 with the formation of Rotherham Town, one of the earliest football clubs in South Yorkshire. Rotherham Town folded in the 1890s, but a new club, Rotherham County, emerged in 1878 and joined the Midland League. In 1925, Rotherham County merged with Rotherham Town (reformed) to create Rotherham United FC, adopting the red and white colours that remain today and earning the nickname the Millers from the town's milling industry.
The new club joined the Midland League and won promotion to the Football League Third Division North in 1925. They competed consistently in the Third Division North, finishing runners-up in 1950–51 for promotion to the Second Division. The club reached the FA Cup fifth round in 1952–53 and moved to Millmoor in 1901, their home for over a century and a venue that became synonymous with the Millers' identity and passionate local support.
The 1950s and 1960s brought promotion to the Second Division in 1950–51 and consistent mid-table finishes. Rotherham reached the FA Cup quarter-finals in 1952–53 and 1967–68. They won promotion to the First Division in 1959–60 but were relegated the following season. These early decades built strong community ties in Rotherham. Promotions, Relegations, and League One in 2026 (1970s–Present)
The 1970s and 1980s saw Rotherham yo-yo between the Third and Fourth Divisions. They won promotion from the Fourth Division in 1974–75 and reached the FA Cup fifth round in 1979–80. The club moved to the New York Stadium in 2012 after Millmoor's closure, a modern 12,021-capacity venue that revitalised support in Rotherham. Under manager Ronnie Moore, they won promotion from League Two in 1999–2000 and 2012–13.
Rotherham achieved promotion to the Championship in 2013–14 via the League One play-offs under Steve Evans. They spent two seasons in the second tier before relegation in 2016–17. The club won promotion back to the Championship in 2017–18 via the League One play-offs under Paul Warne. They maintained Championship status for several seasons, reaching the play-offs in 2019–20 and 2021–22.
Relegation to League One came in 2023–24. Under manager Steve Evans again, Rotherham won promotion back in 2024–25 via the League One play-offs. The New York Stadium has become a fortress with passionate Millers support. Recent years focus on stability, youth development, and community engagement in Rotherham.
In the 2025–26 League One season, Rotherham United sit 9th after 35 games (14 wins, 9 draws, 12 losses, 50 goals for, 48 against, 51 points).
