Sheffield United Football Club was founded on 22 March 1889 at the Adelphi Hotel in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, by the president of Sheffield United Cricket Club. The club was formed to provide winter sport for the cricket club's members and adopted red and white stripes, earning the nickname the Blades from the city's historic steel and cutlery industry. They played their first match on 17 October 1889 against Sheffield FC at Bramall Lane, a ground shared with Yorkshire Cricket Club and still in use today as the oldest professional football stadium in the world.
Sheffield United joined the Football League Second Division in 1892 and won promotion to the First Division in 1892–93 as runners-up. They won the First Division title in 1897–98 under manager Arthur Dick and reached the FA Cup final in 1900–01 (losing 3–1 to Tottenham Hotspur after a replay). The club won the FA Cup in 1914–15 (3–0 against Chelsea at Old Trafford) and reached the final again in 1924–25 (losing 1–0 to Cardiff City after extra time at Wembley).
The interwar period saw consistent First Division presence with strong cup runs. Sheffield United reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1929–30 and finished runners-up in the First Division in 1929–30 and 1935–36. World War II interrupted league play, with Bramall Lane used for military purposes, but the club returned to the First Division post-war and maintained top-flight status for much of the 1950s. These early decades built immense pride in Sheffield. Post-War Decline to Premier League Return (1950s–Present)
The post-war decline saw Sheffield United relegated from the First Division in 1955–56. They spent much of the 1960s and 1970s in the Second Division, winning promotion in 1970–71 under manager John Harris. The club reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1960–61 and 1970–71. Relegation to the Third Division came in 1975–76, followed by promotion back in 1981–82. The club moved to modernised Bramall Lane facilities in the 1990s and reached the Premier League in 1992–93 as First Division runners-up.
Sheffield United spent two seasons in the Premier League from 1992 to 1993–94, reaching the FA Cup semi-finals in 1992–93 (losing 2–1 to Sheffield Wednesday after extra time). Relegation to the Championship came in 1993–94, followed by further drops to League One in 2006–07. The club won promotion from League One in 2011–12 as champions under Danny Wilson and reached the Championship play-offs in 2019–20 under Chris Wilder.
Sheffield United achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2018–19 as Championship runners-up under Chris Wilder. They finished ninth in 2019–20 and spent two seasons in the top flight before relegation in 2020–21. The club won promotion back in 2022–23 as Championship champions under Paul Heckingbottom. Relegation followed in 2023–24, but the club returned to the Premier League in 2024–25 as Championship runners-up under Chris Wilder again.
In the 2025–26 Premier League season, Sheffield United sit 18th after 29 games (6 wins, 8 draws, 15 losses, 32 goals for, 54 against, 26 points). They battle relegation concerns with strong home form at Bramall Lane. Recent years focus on defensive solidity and community engagement.
