Stevenage FC: Early Years and Non-League Foundations
From 1976 Origins to Conference Entry (1976–2010)
Stevenage Football Club was founded on 1 June 1976 as Stevenage Borough FC by a group of local enthusiasts in the new town of Stevenage, Hertfordshire. The club began life in the United Counties League Division One, playing at Broadhall Way (now The Lamex Stadium), a ground that has remained their home and undergone significant redevelopment over the years. They adopted red and white stripes, earning the nickname the Boro.
Early success came quickly. Stevenage won promotion from the United Counties League in 1978–79 and progressed through the Isthmian League, winning Division One in 1980–81 and the Premier Division in 1989–90. They reached the FA Cup first round multiple times in the 1980s and 1990s, building a strong local following in the growing town.
The club joined the Conference (now National League) in 1994 after winning the Isthmian Premier title. They finished runners-up in the Conference in 1995–96 and reached the FA Trophy final in 1995–96, losing 3–2 to Macclesfield Town after extra time at Wembley. Stevenage won the Conference in 2009–10 under manager Graham Westley, earning promotion to the Football League for the first time after 34 years of non-league football.
These non-league decades established Stevenage as a force. From 1976 local beginnings and Isthmian League dominance to Conference title success and League entry, the club built resilience, community support, and ambition in Hertfordshire football at Broadhall Way.

League Entry, Promotions, and League One in 2026 (2010–Present)
Stevenage entered the Football League in 2010–11, finishing sixth in League Two and reaching the play-off final, losing 2–0 to Torquay United. They achieved promotion to League One in 2010–11 via the play-offs under Gary Smith, defeating Torquay 1–0 in extra time at Old Trafford. The club spent three seasons in League One before relegation in 2013–14.
Further ups and downs followed, with relegation to the National League in 2014–15. Stevenage won promotion back to League Two in 2015–16 via the National League play-offs under Darren Sarll. They returned to League One in 2022–23 as League Two runners-up under Steve Evans. The stadium was renamed The Lamex Stadium in 2013 after a sponsorship deal, with ongoing improvements supporting growing crowds.
Recent seasons include strong League One campaigns. Stevenage reached the League One play-offs in 2023–24, losing in the semi-finals. They have maintained third-tier status with focus on attacking football and youth development under current management. The club enjoys passionate support from the local community in Stevenage.
In the 2025–26 League One season, Stevenage sit 8th after 35 games (15 wins, 8 draws, 12 losses, 50 goals for, 45 against, 53 points). They compete strongly for play-off places with consistent home form at The Lamex Stadium. Recent years reflect ambition and competitiveness in the third tier.
