Swindon Town FC: Foundations and Early Years
From 1879 Origins to Football League Entry (1879–1960s)
Swindon Town Football Club was founded in 1879 as New Swindon Association Football Club by employees of the Great Western Railway works in Swindon, Wiltshire. The club emerged from the railway town's industrial community and played its first matches at the Town Gardens before moving to the County Ground in 1896, their home ever since and one of the oldest continuously used stadiums in English professional football. They adopted red shirts and white shorts, earning the nickname the Robins from the club's early red kit.
Swindon joined the Southern League in 1894 and won promotion to the Premier Division in 1897–98. They reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1909–10, losing 2–0 to Newcastle United after a replay at White Hart Lane. The club became founder members of the Football League Third Division in 1920 when the Southern League's top division integrated. They competed consistently in the Third Division South, finishing runners-up in 1952–53 for promotion to the Second Division.
The 1960s brought Swindon's most famous moment. Under manager Danny Williams, they won promotion to the Second Division in 1962–63 and reached the League Cup final in 1968–69, defeating Arsenal 3–1 after extra time at Wembley – the first major trophy in the club's history. This victory earned Swindon entry to the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1969–70, where they reached the semi-finals, losing 2–0 on aggregate to Carl Zeiss Jena.

Premier League Season to League Two in 2026 (1970s–Present)
The 1970s and 1980s saw Swindon yo-yo between the Second and Fourth Divisions. Promotion to the Second Division arrived in 1985–86 and to the First Division in 1989–90 via the play-offs under manager Lou Macari. They spent one season in the Premier League in 1993–94 after promotion from the new First Division in 1992–93 but were relegated after one season. The club reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1990–91 and enjoyed strong cup runs in the 1990s.
Financial difficulties and points deductions led to relegation to the Third Division in 2004–05. Swindon won promotion from League Two in 2004–05 via the play-offs and from League One in 2011–12 as runners-up under Paolo Di Canio. The club spent several seasons in League One before relegation to League Two in 2020–21. The County Ground has undergone redevelopment with new stands and facilities to support growing crowds.
Under managers like Mark Cooper and Ben Garner, Swindon achieved promotion back to League One in 2021–22 but were relegated again in 2022–23. The club has maintained League Two status with mid-table finishes and cup runs. Recent years focus on youth development and community engagement in Swindon.
In the 2025–26 League Two season, Swindon Town sit 15th after 35 games (11 wins, 10 draws, 14 losses, 46 goals for, 52 against, 43 points). They compete solidly in mid-table with passionate Robins support at the County Ground. Recent seasons reflect determination and progress in the fourth tier.
